Sometimes a pedalboard tries to explore as many sounds as its few square feet can hold. Other times, they exist to find the best balance of distortion options readily available. Jon’s board falls in the later category.
Starting with a Durham Electronics Sex Drive to give a clean boost and some bottom end sustain, the signal is fed into two Darkglass Electronics Vintage Microtubes for some strong, but not too destructive tube-like distortion. I’m guessing the goal is to have two tonal options quickly at hand, but I bet having both of them on at the same time could really tear apart that signal. For even more nuanced tonal control, next in line is the Mad Professor Blueberry Bass Overdrive providing plenty of smooth, compressed saturation. The array of distortion pedals ends with one more: the Frederic Effects Green Russian Big Muff, an EHX green box Sovtek Russian Big Muff Pi clone. With all these options of clean boosts, overdrives, and a lot of options in between, a colorful harness of compression isn’t a bad idea. To make room for the tubes, a large part of Jon’s board is taken up by a Retrospec Squeeze Box. Not a subtle dynamic controller, the Squeeze Box is made to be noticed while providing two practical outputs: one for a continued unbalanced line, and a balanced out for a mic level input. And if any rhythmic clarity was lost in that Green Russian Big Muff, it will definitely come pumping back here. Lastly, everything is neatly controlled with an Ernie Ball Volume Jr.
A few honorable mentions not appearing on the board are the DOD Meat Box, the Subdecay Quasar phaser, and the TC Electronics Arena. This board definitely has one focus in mind: coloration. With plenty of harmonic saturation to explore, Jon seems to be searching for the perfect balance of overdrive and punch.
